Southern Lion Books, Inc. is a small independent press dedicated to bringing regional books into print. We assist individual authors and historical groups with custom publishing and printing services. Southern Lion Books founded in 1998 by J. H. (Hank) Segars, author and editor of popular books about the American South.

Hank Segars is managing editor of Southern Lion Books, an independent publisher of regional books, and a consultant to first time authors. He earned an A.B. degree from West Georgia College and a M.Ed. from the University of Georgia. The editor also served as Grants Administrator for the Georgia Department of Education in Atlanta and retired after 34 years of active service with the state of Georgia.

In addition, from 1989 to 1997, Segars worked as a senior editor for the Journal of Confederate History Book Series published by Southern Heritage Press of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. During this time, he worked closely with Dr. John McGlone, editor-in-chief, to learn the business of book publishing and printing.

Editor's Published Books

The editor currently serves as columnist and features writer for the Lake Oconee Living magazine. Some recent articles: “Jukebox Lament,” “ Joel Chandler Harris: Into the Briar Patch,” “The Real Steel Magnolias,” “The Southernization of America,” and “Crawfordville Revisited: A Vanishing Georgia Town Intrigues Hollywood.”

For Georgia Backroads magazine, Segars’s features include "The Monroe Girls Drum and Bugle Corps: Georgia's Goodwill Ambassadors" and “Rebirth and Cultural Revival for Eatonton’s Historic Grammar School.” His articles have appeared in a variety of historical, patriotic, and trade magazines to include a cover story for the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Magazine entitled "Reinventing Yourself in Retirement."

Hank and his wife, Marie, a retired elementary school teacher, now live in the small, picturesque town of Madison, located thirty miles south of Athens, Georgia. The couple are active members of Madison Baptist Church and have two children and three grandchildren. The editor is the founding president of the Northeast Georgia Civil War Round Table and holds memberships in the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Sigma Nu Fraternity, the University of Georgia Alumni Association, and a number of civic and historical associations.
