The Red Terrors

The Story of Glynn Academy’s Drive to Football Glory in 1964

By Jesse Tullos

THE RED TERRORS is a true story about football players, coaches and fans of Glynn Academy High School in 1964 Georgia. Led by a determined core of fourteen athletes, this inspired group battled teams with three times their number (or more) in a season where the outcome of most games was decided late.

The setting for the saga of The Red Terrors is in the historic, coastal city of Brunswick, Georgia.  Unexpected twists occur during the season, but the joy is in the journey this band of boys takes on their way to championship glory. Readers are allowed to glimpse into a portal of what life was about in a small Southern town during the mid-1960s and how local, national, and global events were perceived by high school students of the time. This heartwarming story tells how one small high school football team could touch the hearts and souls of an entire community.

Jesse Tullos spent six months researching material for this story by extracting accounts of the games played from archived newspaper articles. Through extensive interviews with most of the members of the 1964 Red Terrors, he recorded memories of how the games unfolded. Ultimately, the author captured the story of a small group of boys and their coaches, with dedication and loyalty to each other, who accomplished much during a time when their community was in need of heroes.
